Albany House in Petersham, originally built in the early 1900s, has been masterfully transformed by interior designer Carla Barton. The restoration balances the home’s historic charm with contemporary design elements, reflecting the adventurous spirit of its new owners. Playful use of colour and a mix of materials, including brass and fresh whites, infuse the home with personality while maintaining a connection to classicism.
In the living room, the Delie 8lt Pendant by Aromas takes centre stage, its aged gold and black marble finish perfectly complementing the surrounding interiors. Barton’s thoughtful approach to materiality and lighting extends throughout the home. Two Madame 2lt Pendants by Il Fanale hang gracefully over the dining table, the gold brass tone tying in with the fixtures selected throughout the house. In one of the beautifully designed bathrooms, the Delie Wall Light by Aromas subtly echoes its larger counterpart in the living room, creating a cohesive yet unique lighting narrative.
With its rich combination of historic preservation and a contemporary touch, Albany House stands as a testament to considered design, where every detail plays a key role in telling the story of the home’s evolution.
Meet the Designer: Carla Barton
Sydney-based Carla Barton leads a design studio specialising in high-end boutique residential interiors that blend contemporary practicalities with classic proportions and influences. With a strong focus on detail and collaboration, Carla partners with leading artisans to create and curate distinctive, bespoke pieces for her clients.
Growing up as the daughter of a Melbourne-born interior designer and furniture importer, Carla was immersed in a world of objets d’art and creative processes. This early exposure fostered her artistic sensibility and inspired her to pursue a career in both real estate and interior design. Since establishing her own firm in 2021, Carla’s work has gained widespread acclaim, with nominations for prestigious design awards affirming her as a rising talent in the Australian interior design industry.
